Afaf Zurayk
Born in Beirut, Afaf Zurayk graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1970 with a BA in Fine Arts with distinction, and obtained an MA in Fine Arts from Harvard University in 1972. She has taught at Beirut University College (now Lebanese American University), the American University of Beirut, in the continuing education programs of the Corcoran College of Art and Design and at Georgetown University. Zurayk's work is included in the permanent collections of the British Museum in London, Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, the Sursock Museum in Beirut and Darat al-Funun in Amman, as well as in many private collections. Her work has been reviewed in The Washington Post, The Washington Review, the Arabic daily al-Hayat and the French daily L'Orient-Le Jour, among other publications.
Zurayk has published eight books. Inspired and guided by both music and poetry, her artwork probes emotional experiences through turbulence to acceptance, ever seeking transparency in painting the color of light.
