Ink on rice paper
This is a protocol. It's a score. This is the name of the galaxy, Perseus NGC 1275. And the Chandra Observatory said they found finally this note of the black hole, which is a B flat, 57 octaves below middle C. So it's an impossible note. It's like a non-human note, so it's a very conceptual, forced anthropogenic type of note. And so, this is a score for that note, and you know how in music you go all the way down, the lower it is. So this is kind of a hint of, like, going all the way down with just the material, which is the paper, and look all the way—like, if you were from the above—you have to look and see. This is a fermata, which in music means to keep going as long as you feel like, and the instruction is hold the B flat for 17 million years because that's the time it took that voice of the black hole to arrive to us. And so it's the impossible score and the impossible instruction, right? So, it's a little play with that.
