Martian's Parlor

Playable art works from Alix Hugonnier and Joanna Wong and board games by the Martian’s Parlor collective are on view and ready for play in the gallery's lower level.

While they are games, these works are not just for fun; a politics of resistance runs tenor throughout. Alix Hugonnier’s Sykes Picot – a half-wooden, half-felted Backgammon set – imposes two modes of play, contrasting the hushed atmospheres of European boudoirs against the popular and noisy game played in the East and the South. L’annee du chat and les Adresses Jaunes, by Joanna Wong and Martian’s Parlor, take inspiration from the pro-democracy movement and culinary traditions of Hong Kong; Sept Solines asks players to explore how images can be used to shape a narrative.
